I have not been a fan of double exposure in the past, however Spanish photographer, Cha Blasco, has an extraordinarily beautiful set of photographs massing his portfolio. Each image is breathes its own obscurity; illustrative and phantasmal tales of Spanish sub culture. A great contributor to the lomo-sphere of the photography world, Cha Blasco shoots mainly with variations of the Holga camera model; a form of photography characterized by its deterrence to the technicalities and aesthetics of traditional shooting.

Headed by Melanie Valera, the music is a Franco-American force, underlining Melanie's insatiable vigor, with soft pop femininity and tremendous energy. Embarking on her own in 2003, Melanie started the Tender Forever project armed with nothing more than a "laptop, a long mic cord and almost too much enthusiasm". "A Dynamically Adaptable Exhibition Space"- You have to see it, to really believe it. Dan Quinn, all of 24 years old, set out to create an exhibition space that he had complete control over. A space where he didn't have to pay rent and could morph the form into whatever size / shape fit the exhibition. Now located in New York City, he rents a truck, fills it with wood, hot lamps, a generator and other building materials, grabs a few volunteers (i.e. friends), and sets up shop. Not only one of the most brilliant curatorial concepts I have ever encountered, but also a very sweet and innovative individual. Please go support him, there will be a few upcoming shows in August. I guarantee you an exceptional time.

However, now I will bombard this pathetic excuse for a blog with some delightful finds I have encountered over the past few weeks. One of which being, Katie Reynolds, photographer/adventurer and good friend of mine. While most people were admiring the fireworks over the Fourth of July, relaxing on the beach, or having barbecues... Katie and I took the time to sneak in to some abandoned buildings in Maryland, and slide down a water fall. So, I think my friend Phil recommended this to me a while back. If this is true, kudos to him.

Hopefully this makes New York enthusiasts look at their environment a little differently, a little more iconically, a little more lego-ically, which is a whole lot better. So cheers to legos- the most graphic friendly of childhood toys, that have stood favorably since 1939. Also, the designer is pretty brilliant...

Digital technology has certainly altered the core creative industry, especially in the area of cinema. Illustrators have been replaced by: vectors, CGI, MAYA, and various other forms of rendering applications, as businesses adjust to the increasing pace of the industry and opportunistic technological advances.

However, for this particular piece over 6000 paintings were produced. Reza Dolatabadi, works ambidextrously as both illustrator/interactive artist. His images tend to favor science fiction, making for phantasmic eye candy and a super imagination. For this particular piece, he wanted to make a film that would be a beautiful painting no matter when it was paused. Created as a student film project, this falls no where near the "film school students" stereotype- jaunty, over-intellectual, avant garde pieces of experimentation (not to say, whatsoever, that experimental film is bad). Instead it unravels a nightmarish tale illustrated in a beautifully atypical form.

"Khoda is a psychological thriller; a student project which was seen as a ‘mission impossible’ by many people but eventually proved possible!"

Duo artists Gilbert and George, began working together in 1967 making their first works at the notorious Central St. Martins School of Art in London. "Living Sculptures", the cornerstone project that launched them to celebrity status, was an exercise in performance art: they applied metallic face paint and together stood as "Living Statues". While studying at Central St. Martins, they debuted as singing scultupres and stood on a table, singing along to a recording of Flanagan and Allen's song "Underneath the Arches", sometimes for a day at a time. The suits used for this piece, became a uniform / gimmick, and were rarely seen without them or each other. Implicit in their work is the idea that an artist’s sacrifice and personal investment is a necessary condition of art. Their trademark format employs a grid with a photograph broken into its square sections, becoming a unified field of signs and imagery.

Henry Watson showed me this artist. I'm obsessed with him now. He filmed children playing various video games, capturing the interaction between the kids and the screen.

In 2009 they plan to do a study at The Media Center in Bournemouth University, called 'War and Leisure'. They will be filming kids as they play war games and watch war on the news, in documentaries and in movies. The footage will be analyzed with FACS, a research tool created by Paul Eckman, and the results compared with interviews and psychological profiles of the subject.

I recently received an unjust ticket, a $100 fine, for a misunderstanding. I don't have $100. Doesn't NYPD have anything else to do, other than sit around in subways giving out tickets? I'll be seeing you in court, asshole. It's nice to know first hand, how NY is extorting money.

Anyway, there is an image featured in Code magazine, a Belgium based art and culture magazine, by artist Manor Grunewald. I spotted this image with the ticket incident still looming, and it made a bit happier.

MK12 is a graphic design company known best for their work on title sequences for films such as Quantum of Solace and Stranger than Fiction. Some of my personal favorites featured on their website include: DIK Shorts I-III, 4D softcore sweater porn, the adult swim series, and the JPower video- among several others... Needless to say, I'm far more crazed over the in house work.

Quantum of Solace is the title sequence that first caught my attention of these designers. MK12 is a young, small company that began in 2000 between four friends (Timmy Fisher, Ben Radatz, Matt Fraction, and Jed Carter), who met at Kansas City Art Institute. They began working with MTV and ESPN earning their big break with Stranger than Fiction. Quantum of Solace is not only illustratively stunning, but as with most of MK12's work, the type treatment is flawless and brilliantly intertwined. Quite amazing work.

Images lingering from the Great Depression have become a foundation for photo pioneers of post generations. Even if the names: Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Gordon Parks, etc. do not conjure visuals in your immediate memory, their photo works are certainly recognizable. Images of destitute farmhands, an exhausted mother and her starving children, a portrait of a dilapidated barn as a metaphor for the times- have long since laid heavily in our hearts as not only historical documentation, but budding examples of the growth of photography as an art form.

Today we face similar tribulations. Though not quite bread line weather, this generation has fared its own variations of distress. Whether the weather calls for storms in waves of ponzi schemes, a declining automotive industry, an enormous deficit from a war that should never have been wrought, we now reap the consequences of bad investments and poor behavior all around. Not all of us have taken part in these destructive decisions, yet our suffering from them is inevitable. Thousands have lost homes and retirement, many are just barely making ends meet- terrified everyday of being downsized in a job they already hate. Students can not find jobs to pay off their loans- a growing concern remaining even through bankruptcy. Some Michigan residents cannot afford electricity and Sacramento's "tent city", has grown 400%in the past three years.

My reason for dredging up recession rhetoric is because Slate, an online news magazine published by the Washington Post Interactive Division, has a forum for photographers and enthusiasts alike to post their photographs of this 21st century recession on a blog created on Flickr. Each of us are experiencing this economic downturn differently- some drastic, some incredibly similar. I think this is a great use of media to provide a sort of unfiltered group hug to our fellow compatriots and encourage everyone to partake in this exercise of humanity.

Fantastic article at Design Observer, a blog maintained by graphic design celebrities such as Michael Beirut, Jessica Helfand, Stephen Heller, Eric Baker, etc. about the ensuing issues of tote consumption and its counter-active ramifications on the green movement.

Summary:
Environmental responsibilities have become the ever consuming issues that face designers this decade. It appears whenever a tentative solution can be found, it is glamorized to the point of over-production, being "claimed" by subculture "activist" groups to be formulated into their fashion agendas. Thus the current situation is formed: "Best intentions are almost immediately buried under an avalanche of conspicuous consumption and proliferation of choice. The environmental promise of reusable bags becomes pretty dubious when there are closets and drawers full of them in every home." -Design Observer

Designing tote bags is a tempting undertaking for any artist / designer. The surface is two dimensional and rectangular, making it quite similar to paper or canvas. Hundreds are sent out daily as promotional materials, sold in grocery stores, traded as art objects, etc. But the ever looming problem is to now uncover a way to restrain the overproduction of these little trend setting accessories, so that we as designers are not feeding into the over consumption.

Book Industry Enters Shaky Chapter

All Things Considered, December 5, 2008 · The publishing world is still trying to absorb this week's bad news: Several publishing houses announced layoffs or salary freezes, and a major reorganization at Random House left two major players in the business without jobs. All this comes as booksellers head into the holiday season — when 25 percent of all book sales occur.

No one thought that publishing would be spared from the current economic turmoil. But when the fallout from the Random House reorganization was announced on the same day that Simon & Schuster and the Christian publishing company Thomas Nelson announced layoffs, it stunned the book world, says Sara Nelson, editor-in-chief of Publishers Weekly.

"It's a microcosm of what's been going on in the real world, as it were — I mean, in the larger world," she says. "But I think, while many of these things were not unexpected, the kind of volume of them just was shocking and really sobering."

Even as the bad economic news was bearing down, most people in the book business were trying to be optimistic. Books, they said, are recession-proof because they're cheap. But Larry Robin, who has been in the bookselling business since 1960, doesn't buy that conventional wisdom.

"In today's world, it isn't cheap entertainment anymore," he says. "With the computer and with iPods and Netflix, I mean, you can get all sorts of other entertainment."

Robin's Book Store has been a fixture in downtown Philadelphia since 1936. But now Robin is getting out of the business of selling new books and will sell used ones instead.

"If it was a matter of hanging on for a year, I could do that," he says. "But I don't see it changing. I don't see the economy getting better for a long time. I don't see that economic model of a retail store coming back."

Struggling To Survive
Independent bookstores have been struggling to survive ever since the advent of the chain stores. But now, even the chains are under threat, with competition from big-box stores like Costco and, more significantly, from Amazon, the online bookselling behemoth. Barnes & Noble, Borders and Books-A-Million all reported a decline in sales in the third quarter, and there's some concern that Borders may not survive.

Bookstores around the country reported mixed sales over the Thanksgiving weekend. But there was good news for some, like Becky Anderson of Anderson's Bookshop in suburban Chicago. She says so far, business is better than she expected. It's next year she's worried about. She says she expects to pull back on everything — including book orders.

"There may be some of those books that might have been a smaller buy that maybe ... we're going to let go for now," she says. "And if it's something that we're hearing some buzz on after the fact, then we'll definitely pick it up. But there are some things that we, you know, we may not be buying as much of, or maybe skipping."

The prospect of fewer book orders and tightening credit has already led one publishing house to make a decision that set off alarm bells throughout the book industry. Just before Thanksgiving, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a newly merged company, announced it was putting a temporary halt on the acquisition of new books.

Ellen Geiger, an agent with the Frances Goldin Literary Agency, says the move made people nervous.

"Because acquisitions are really the lifeblood of our business," Geiger says. "It's the pipeline, it's the food chain, and if one company is halting their acquisitions, it's really a cause of great concern."

New Chapter: Digital Advances
Like other industries caught in the economic downturn, publishing is being forced to take a hard look at how it does business.

"We were already facing certain big challenges before the recession came along, and those challenges were connected to the traditional mechanisms of the book business," says Jonathan Burnham, the CEO, vice president and publisher of Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.

Burnham says the economic downturn means publishers may be forced to find an alternative to the system of returns, which allows stores to return unsold books to warehouses, resulting in books being shipped back and forth across the country at great cost. Beyond that, Burnham says, the industry must now truly grapple with digital advances, like electronic readers, that are already leading to dramatic changes.

"It's making us focus even more intently on how to make sense of a digital future and how quickly we should move toward it, given that publishing digitally will liberate publishers, and indeed readers, from the costs and the problems of producing physical books," he says.

Burnham says book lovers will always be able to buy beautifully produced copies of books. But there could be fewer of them as booksellers and book publishers search for a new way to do business in the new economy.

Round the World with Nelly Bly:
In the late 1800's and early 1900's Nelly Bly, was a pioneer journalist and a revolutionary in journalism for women. "She is most famous for an undercover exposé in which she faked insanity to study a mental institution from within."

She traveled around the world in 72 days, again gaining much fame by defeating the Jules Verne character, Phileas Fogg's record, of 80 days. She covered much of the Women's Suffrage movement of 1913 and stories on Europe's Eastern Front during World War I.

She has since, been immortalized into a board game as of the 1890's. Why can't there be more game boards like this??

One of my heroes: I actually was able to meet Kander in London on a school trip, and although he is an amazing artist he is quite charming and down to earth. The pompous artist stigma was not to be found in his studio whatsoever. Photographing nudes, "signs of life", candid peepshows, as well as celebrities as famous as David Lynch, Kander proves consistently to be a versatile painter hiding behind the less than modest lens of his beautiful hasselblad. He is quite an engaging creative.

It is of no shock that people/artists/businesses/corporations/everyone is trying, (or trying to come off) to project a deep shade of green. That is, "reduce the carbon footprint" we so leisurely leave behind. Recently, there has been a sudden boom in bicycle culture. Well, sudden is a broad term actually. From Amsterdam's discouragement of cars, to the United States' Critical Mass, we have seen a wonderfully steady increase in the car-bike swap over the past decades.

Critical Mass's first ride, took place in San Francisco, 1992. Totally self organized, non-commercial, and non-competitive, the rides now take place across the nation as a "planned coincidence" and have been described by the New York Times as "monthly political protest rides." These tours have also moved globally, including tours in the UK, Canada, Australia, Asia... Indeed they are a force.

Now it appears to be quite the fashion to be an environmentally conscious bicycler. The days have long passed that bike riding is a term associated with "hippies". Rather, it appears to have taken on the term "trend", or dare I say, "fashion". In the United States, of the places I have visited or lived in, Oregon, California, Delaware, Seattle, New York, Philadelphia and so many others have increased in environmentally friendly bike traffic and culture.

I recently stumbled upon a nice little blog that actually documents the bike trends fashion globally: copenhagencyclechic

So, drop the car, if you haven't already. Take a trip to the nearest farmer's market, and pick up a bike. It will keep you healthy, and in love with everything.

Stephan Sagmeister's: "Things I have learned in my life so far"

Yet another fantastic work from Stefan Sagmeister.
In a slipcase filled with 15 short stories, Sagmeister details the things he has learned in his life, "which comes largely from a lengthy list of revelations jotted down in his diary" when taking a hiatus from commercial design work of his "high-profile" clients in 2000.

Each book briefly details one project and the lessons he has learned from each project. Steven Heller talks about Sagmeister's time teaching at SVA, School of Visual Arts in New York City. He would insist to his students to "harness art and design as tools of social renewal; if the tools are well conceived and smartly crafted the students add creative enrichment to whatever they touch."

Each book is filled with wonderful images of his sculptural typographic experiments, giving the reader a plethora of eye candy, from beef to flowers, to sugar and bubbles.

OAK KNOLL book festival

So, my day started off with a giant kick. I woke up around 3:30 am after falling asleep to searching the extensive link section of Juxtapoz magazine online around 12:20 am, to go on a monster run with my friend Owen so that I could work more on the headline type for the new Green Delaware site, which I want to seem approachable and less sanitized as the site currently is. In a manic caffeinated state, watched John Carpenter's, They Live, which has now become my favorite alien movie of all time, while working on such headlines. I recommend everyone go and watch this movie, especially if you are interested in cult classics and very very cheesy script lines. Then started working on the new Bloom poster, a small very classy cute boutique in Newark DE, for Mimi the owner. Close to completion, all it needs now is the final critique from Mimi and minor adjustments. Start work at bloom at 10:30 and work until 2pm. Mimi liked the poster, still needs minor adjustments finally time for home...

Sike, oak knoll book festival is today, so I leave from work with my friend Craig for that.

Well at least Delaware can get one thing right. Oak Knoll book festival is an annual event that occurs every fall. If you are even in the slightest bit interested in bookbinding or letter press or printmaking of any persuasion, then you have just stumbled upon a very awesome thing. This is an international book festival which receives participants from Iowa to Europe. I went last year, and it was amazing, this year was even better.
Last year, University of the Arts made an appearance and cleaned house by selling individual prints for only a dollar. This year there were an additional 3+ colleges that displayed their amazing letterpress and printmaking work. The school presses in attendance were The Annis Press, Eucalyptus Press, Black Book Press, Center For the Book, University of the Arts, as well as a few others.
Of course every year we all pick favorites... discreetly that is. Some of my favorites included University of Iowa for their sleek binding styles and print work. It is really nice to see that the colleges can keep the "fine printers" on their toes as far as contemporary printing is concerned. Of the "fine/ professional" letter printers, Matthew Tyson was by far my favorite. He bound his books out of incredibly raw found materials such as cardboard, rubber, the hard plastic covering on diner tables. I inquired about his process to using such materials. He responded,
"I don't think that you should judge a book by it's cover, but maybe you should... I like to find things with the content and layout of my book in mind. Like, I was walking around London with this in hand (he holds a handful of beautiful printing grey folio pages) and decided to stop in and check out my friends paper store. There he had the most beautiful grey blue paper. I layed it out and didn't even have to cut it down! It fit perfectly and he even had only enough for my series! It was fate! I called my wife and immediately told her that it was going to have to be $10 a cover, expensive, but that was just what it was going to have to be."
"The same goes for this one, (he picks up another book), this book took me seven years until I was satisfied with its completion. But sometimes that time is completely necessary. You need that time."

This is oak knoll. It's basically amazing. Partly because of the amazing work, but mostly because of the intensity.

After this, Craig and i get icecream and play on the drift wood by the shore side. It is beautiful here.

When visiting London in June, we happened across Royal College of Art's Exhibition. Underneath a huge tent, sat some immense talent, one of which being Hanne Berbaak.
Incredible gouache illustrations mostly in black and white, the artist illustrates short stories and life. Using thick black lines, Berkaak's illustrations come to life as ghostly images of life reminiscent of cartoon animation.

The news gettin' you down?

Well it's not much more optimistic at http://www.salon.com/, but it is a lot less jaded. Salon is an independent online news paper. As major newspapers like the new york times, receive most of their financial support from advertisements, Salon is an independent newspaper and does not have to adhere to the constraints of large advertising agencies. If nothing else, it is very worth using as a supplement for additional news coverage.

Ever Heard of Global Warming?

Michael Salter is an artist with an unlimited palette. From Styrofoam to city walls it seems he manages to make larger then life impressions that, in some cases, will last even longer then cockroaches. Most intriguing for me, would have to be Salter's Styrobots, which tower 20 feet. I discovered this urban artist through the help of the ammazing magazine "Hi-Fructose".
